Southend United signed striker Alex (Toastie) Burns on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling on 22 June 1998. The 24-year-old Scotsman has been playing in Holland, but was previously with Motherwell He left Fir Park in July 1997 to join Dutch first division side FC Heracles also under the Bosman ruling. His nickname 'toastie' is probably a play on 'burnt toast'! Burns is reported to be a skilful player who can play as a striker or midfielder, but at Motherwell his best position was in midfield. Unfortunately, Burns was criticized regularly by many Motherwell fans for being too lazy, although towards the end of the 1996/97 season he was rated as one of their best performers. He scored 7 goals in 27 outings for Motherwell. Burns is likely to be paired with David Whyte in a new-look Southend attack for the 1998 / 99 season.
