Simon joined Southend in February 1998 having previously played in the centre of defence for Mansfield Town, Middlesbrough, Derby, Sheffield Wed, Bolton + Wolves. At the start of the 1997/98 season Simon found his first team chances at Premier side Bolton extremely limited so was loaned to First Division Wolves in September. He made 4 appearances, but injury problems spoilt his stay. When he moved to Southend on a free transfer he immediately formed a strong centre back partnership with on loan Richard Jobson which gave some hope to the beleaguered SUFC fans in the middle of the second division relegation season. Richard's departure lead to a pairing with Keith Dublin which was not so productive, but showed promise for the future. The signing of Rob Newman in the summer of 1998 + the adoption of a three man centre back formation with first Leo Roget then David Morley taking the third position saw a strength in defence that SUFC fans had only dreamt of over the previous two seasons. Simon is prepared to come forward for set pieces + scored twice in the opening 5 games of 1998/99 season. He is rumoured to have a bet with Rob as to who will get the most goals this season. Simon has already become a favourite with the fans + if he remains free of injury will become one of the mainstays of the team pushing for promotion.
