Profile

27th October 1998

Former Arsenal trainee who won England caps at Schoolboy + Youth level + was a member of their FA Youth Cup winning team in 1994. Appeared 9 times in the Gunners first team, but never gained a regular place. Loaned to Rotherham in Dec 96 then to the Blues in Mar 97. Released by Arsenal he opted to sign for SUFC in July 1997 despite offers from Wigan, Ipswich Town and Cambridge United. Appeared regularly in the first team during the relegation season 1997/98, but did not show the brilliant form he was very obviously capable of achieving in more than a handful of games. Seemed to form an understanding with Nathan Jones on the left side of the team, but again not consistently. Started the 1998/99 season as a regular mainly operating on the left wing + scored twice in the opening 4 matches, but he was dropped after 9 matches. It took fan power at Scarborough to persuade Martin to bring him on, that gave the side more balance + led to the goal. Another goal against Orient, when he was without doubt the best player on the pitch, made him top scorer with 3 goals.
