Born in the Durham village of Tantobie, Joe captained his school team, Derwent Valley Boys and Durham County Boys. Then joined the ground staff of Preston North End and was with them for five seasons but the nearest he came to playing for the first team was when he was included in their Cup Semi-Final squad. After one season with Lincoln City Joe moved to Darlington where he was made club captain. He stayed with the Quakers for four seasons and helped them gain promotion during that time. Signed for us on 29th October 1969.

Hobbies: cricket, golf and physical education.
