Southends first ever season in the upper half of
the football league promised much under the management of Dave Webb.
On New Year's Day 1992 Southend kicked off at 12noon against Newcastle
United. A 4-0 victory saw Southend top what is now the First Division
for 3 hours.
There are many Southend supporters who would rate the goal scored
by Ian Benjamin in the 1-0 victory at Bury the previous season as
the greatest ever moment in Southend's history and they have a fair
point. That win guaranteed Southend promotion into the second division
for the first time ever. |
