Former Blues favourite Tilson took over the reins when Webb left. He had been reserve team coach under Wignall and shared the bench with another old Blue, Paul Brush, who started off by helping for expenses only following his sacking from Orient.
On 11 March 2004 the board formally appointed Steve Manager until the end of the season with Brush his no 2. They will go down in Blue's history as they took the team to their first ever major cup final at Cardiff on 21 March 2004.
That was only the start of the good times although supporters may not have seen it as a poor start to the 2004-05 season left them bottom after 5 games, but then superb form saw the team go top and to another LDV final Cardiff in April. The final was lost in extra time and last minutes jitters saw a drop to 4th on the last day of the season. However they beat Northampton (again) over two legs and won the playoff final in Cardiff . Promoted to League One in his first full season!! The League Managers Association recognised his achievements with the award of League 2 Manager of the Season.
Next season by mid-October after beating Notts. Forest 1-0 on live TV to record a record breaking eighth successive win, the Shimpers went top of League 1. A poorer run of form saw them pegged back, but results improved again and at the start of 2006 they were back top again and finally won the title on the last day of the season. Once again Steve's fellow managers rightly voted him no. 1. Two promotions and two cup finals in two years must make this man the most successful manager of all time!!
Steve's first taste of management at international level came in February 2006 when he was Assistant Manager for the Football League's U21 international vs. the Italian League (won 1-0).
On 4 July 2010 the official site reported Steve was placed on gardening leave from his management responsibilities after a unanimous board decision. He was the 5th longest serving league manager having been in post for 6 years and 224 days. |
